The Three Facets of Health

Being healthy isn’t just having a healthy body. Being healthy includes using a healthy mind, a healthy body, and a healthy spirit. It takes all three for a truly healthy individual. Gardening fosters each of three. This is my personal experience.

A Healthy Head

Communing with nature, in this case, gardening can clean my thoughts better than anything else. We all have had periods in our own lives where issues can become overwhelming. It appears that all that we do just are not enough- lying awake at night, not able to concentrate on anything other than our difficulties, or occasionally sinking into a serious depression.

Depression has been a life” curse” for me. I often suffer from what’s known as clinical depression meaning which I inherited and also have a chemical imbalance. The imbalance may bring on an episode of depression in an instant without any obvious reason.

It’s times like these I grab my garden tools and head outside. Weather permitting of course. If the weather is bad and I can’t get out, I am in trouble. I’m thankful I reside in a climate in which this doesn’t happen too frequently.

When I am in the garden or lawn working with my landscape, my head has a chance to relax so to speak. No real focus. How can this help? Focusing on my difficulties has proceeded from the”forefront” (conscious) to the”spine” (subconscious) of my mind. Of course, the difficulties haven’t gone off, and they just aren’t controlling my every thought. Conscious thought demands energy. That’s a contributing factor to a depressed person’s fatigue. Subconscious thought doesn’t require nearly as much energy.

However, the subconscious is at work processing and searching for solutions without my conscious awareness. On many occasions, I have had solutions or ideas pop into my head whilst working in the garden instead of even considering any issues. WOW! I call it my”Mountain Top Experience” when this occurs.

A Healthy Body

Gardening is great exercise! Doctors urge their patients to engage in various workout regimens to improve their health. In the mall or walking tracks, you see recovering heart patients walking to assist regain their health. Sometimes it’s preventive measures to encourage a healthy body.

Maybe I have a strange way of looking at things, but I see walking around in circles as a waste of time. Why don’t you get your exercise and be successful at the same time? Wouldn’t it be much rewarding to encourage a healthy body and also have something else to show for this? In other words, two benefits for the one effort.

My gardening attempts give me the exercise I need and generate a gorgeous flower bed (or landscape, veggie garden, etc.) to enjoy. Instead of”walking in circles” I now have something to show for it in addition to this exercise.

Can gardening provide you adequate exercise in all of the areas you need maybe your question? You can design almost any type of exercise regimen you can think of about gardening. Of course, it is highly a good idea to consult with your healthcare professional before engaging in any sort of exercise program.

Here are only a few examples of workouts Which Can Be obtained from gardening:

Flexibility

Gaining flexibility helps to alleviate muscle tension, improve balance and posture, improve range of motion and stretch, and relax muscles. Think of all the contortions you put your body in by just weeding your garden or landscape. Bending over, sitting down, getting up, or attaining to name a couple. In general, you personally or using muscles that simply walking doesn’t do.

Cardiovascular Exercise

Also known as”cardio”, aerobics increases your pulse, also helps burn calories rapidly along with reducing symptoms of depression, prevent many forms of cardiovascular disease, and enhances insulin resistance to diabetes. The ideal instrument to offer aerobic exercise is the old fashioned shovel! Simply digging in the dirt can increase the heart rate faster than anything else that I know of. And you can work at a pace that is acceptable for you.

Power

Strength exercises enhance strength, tone muscles, and burn off fat. Furthermore, the benefits of improving bone strength, fighting osteoporosis, decrease blood pressure, preventing lower back pain, raising your resting metabolic rate, promoting psychological well-being, helping in insulin sensitivity, and glucose metabolism. WOW! Selecting up sacks of fertilizer, pulling, prying, digging, etc., are just a couple of strength exercises that come along with gardening.

I’m sure that you can think of many different ways of optimizing your workout regimen while gardening. Please, DON’T OVERDO IT ON YOUR FIRST DAY OUT THIS SPRING! Becoming overzealous and suffering the effects can be quite discouraging.

A Healthy Spirit

God also writes the gospel in our daily lives. The mind-clearing benefits of being able to touch, feel, smell, see, and listen to His creations are evidence of Being.

A healthy Spirit is not just about religion! A healthy Spirit has been at peace with production (the Declaration of Nature), it’s beauty, and being part of it. Gardening provides the avenue to building the soul!

To a certain extent, anglers can choose the pre-determined (creation) characteristics of nature and organize them in a way that embellishes our enjoyment. For example, we can arrange a flower bed to offer certain colors, many different feelings, to frame a certain view, or a multitude of different ways of organizing nature around us.

Our soul is lifted we can become a part of nature itself. Being able to touch, feel, smell, see, and hear what has been given us to appreciate excites our senses.
