Bookbinding Bee! A Culture Days Demonstration at the Toronto Public Library
Saturday, October 1st, 2011
1pm to 4pm
Dufferin/St. Clair Branch
1625 Dufferin St, Toronto, Ontario

In collaboration with Culture Days and the Neighbourhood Arts Network, Toronto Public Library hosts over 80 Toronto-based artists and arts organizations in a celebration of arts and culture at library branches throughout the city of Toronto. inPrint Collective presents a Bookbinding Bee at Dufferin St. Clair Library.

In the spirit of quilting bees, members and artist-friends of the inPrint Collective will join together and offer a demonstration on the finer points of bookbinding. Throughout the afternoon, various artists will discuss printmaking and bookbinding, including a talk on papermaking and relief printmaking. Artists will display their books for viewers to browse through.

In the demonstration, each artist will print a different page of a book and make editions for every artist involved to bind with. By the end of the activity, artists will create a bound, hardcover artist anthology. In addition, viewers can print pages, be shown simple pamphlet binding skills, and create their own books.

That’s What She Really Said

Dialogues Amongst the Feminine
Curated by Anisia Avram and Jessica Bisson

Reception: March 20th 6-8pm
Samuel J. Zacks Room 109 Stong College
York University
4700 Keele St.
Toronto, Ontario.

Understanding the feminine as an unstable category, yet one rich with identifications, expressions, practices and interpretations, “That’s What She Really Said” features a wide display of art from/ and/ or about women. The exhibit grapples with two major demands: we try to answer the Guerrilla Girls’ call for the presence of women artists in gallery spaces, while we internalize the meanings and the constructions that come to the fore by bringing together art under this context. We demand an examination of what is being both said and unsaid between the borders of our art, when we bring them together in the space of a gallery. The colloquial title of the show, “That’s What She Really Said” speaks to the dialogues of art made by people with certain positionalities–some common, some disparate, some even altogether missing– in the world. What hangs in the spaces between our art is both the potential solidarity but also the potential disjuncture offered by the space of a gallery. The show brings together a room full of women, but also begs the questions of who is speaking, what is being said/unsaid and who is at the other end listening?
